School Executive & Trustee Governance Board
The school is an educational charity and company limited by guarantee.
The overall responsibility for the day to day running of our school lies with the Head of School, Alex Matthews, supported by the Leadership team.
The Governance Board Trustees oversee strategic direction and are accountable to the Charity Commission and the ISI for the financial and legal running of the school.
The school employs a professional Clerk to the Board and also external accountancy firm.
Governance work carried out by Trustee Governors is unremunerated and Trustees volunteer their time - on average 2-14 hours per week dependent on area of focus.
The role of Trustee Governor is voluntary. Following a formal application process Trustees are elected to the Board with appointments based on having professional skills relevant to the needs of the school Board at a given point in the school’s development.
The Board is made up of both current and former GWS parents, and also external members with no other association with the school. All Trustees work to the Nolan Principles of Public Life.
We are particularly interested to hear from prospective External Trustees, ideally with prior Board experience and with professional experience in:
Education
Safeguarding
Human resources
Property Development/Management/Estates

David Gore
(Unremunerated)
Board Trustee
Interim ChairAs a sales and admin professional in the hospitality and entertainment industries for almost 30 years, David has a proven track record of management and customer satisfaction of the highest level. He prides himself on going the extra mile to meet the needs of both his company and the person making the purchase. The day to day tasks of his job mean any admin related to Waldorf Greenwich School are by second nature to him.
As a Trustee of various international charity NGOs since 2009, David has accrued a great many years of experience, covering all matters in the charity and governance sectors, be that safe guarding, dealing with HMRC, budgeting and financial reporting and more. With a degree in Business and Environment, resting on an HND in Marketing & Finance, this puts him an excellent position to use his skills to help with all areas of Waldorf Greenwich School, including its development.
David is able to interrogate financial figures and conceptualize business strategies, ensure regulations and requirements are met (and exceeded). As a friendly person by nature, David is able to work with people from all walks of life and with varying levels of skill and aptitude; motivating people to successfully work together towards a common goal with efficacy.
As a parent of a child who’s behaviour transformation at Waldorf Greenwich School went from ‘challenging’ to ‘excelling’ in a term and a half, David has a huge amount personally invested in the ongoing success of Waldorf Greenwich School going forwards, both for his child and the children of others who follow.

Jane Bryant
(Unremunerated)
Board Trustee
Health and SafetyI joined the Board of Greenwich Waldorf School in October 2024, having previously served on the Boards at York Steiner School, and until last year, the Well Women Center in Wakefield. My introduction to our school was through the wonderful Greenwich Acorns – I took two of my grandsons to the Friday group before they moved on to kindergarten at St George’s.
By profession I’m a practicing Architect with over 30 years’ experience in the private and public sector. I was part of the initiative to transform the building at the York school to enable it to generate income through lettings; at the Well Women Centre I secured deposit funding for, and project managed, the purchase and refurbishment of premises for the charity.
I have three adult children who all attended Steiner Schools – at Michael Hall then York up to Class 8; my younger son also then went to Wynstone’s Upper School. I studied with NESST (North of England Steiner School Training), and subsequently taught Upper School mathematics, geometry and technical drawing at the York School.
I’m currently the link trustee for Health & Safety at Greenwich. In recent months huge progress has been made with systems and processes in this area - and I’m happy to be contacted on H&S matters - or anything else that I can help with. Its a great privilege to be play a small part in supporting this inspiring education and our wonderful school.

Gemma Goggin
(Unremunerated)
Board Trustee
HRGemma Goggin is a parent of two boys and a classically trained actor, having graduated from LAMDA in 2003. She has worked predominantly in theatre, alongside the many “day jobs” which jobbing actors hold, which has led to her growing a parallel career in people, culture and organisational development.
Gemma currently works as an independent HR and People & Culture consultant and is an Associate CIPD member. With over two decades of experience across commercial and creative organisations, she supports individuals and teams to build clear, humane and values-led working environments. Her work focuses on people operations, organisational culture, psychological safety, and helping organisations turn good intentions into everyday practice.
Alongside her consultancy work, Gemma is an elected member of the Equity Women’s Committee and a steering group volunteer for Freelancers Make Theatre Work. She is particularly interested in reshaping how institutions support parents, carers and freelancers — championing flexible working, transparency, and cultures where people feel informed, respected and able to advocate for themselves. She is pushing for job-shares across the Arts to ensure that the women don’t continue to leave the Industry due to a lack of flexibility.
As a trustee, Gemma brings a strong interest in governance, staff wellbeing and transparency, and is keen to contribute to the school as a living organisation — one that supports not only the children in its care, but also the adults who hold it. She was not familiar with Waldorf or Steiner prior to her family discovering the school, but the ethos of meeting the child where they are at, and thus allowing them to thrive as their authentic selves, sits very much alongside Gemma’s ideals for working cultures.es here

Patricia Sewell
(Remunerated)
Professional Clerk to the Board
I am an experienced Governance Professional with a strong background in school governance, providing advice and support to boards of trustees and governors across the UK. I also served as a school governor for 5 years, until my sons left primary school, which gave me valuable insight into the realities and responsibilities of effective governance.
My professional background is in HR, and I previously worked for the UK’s largest supermarket as a Senior HR Manager, partnering with directors across Loss Prevention, Supply Chain, and Group Communications. This experience has given me a strong commercial perspective and a deep understanding of people management, organisational governance, and strategic leadership.
With expertise in governance frameworks, statutory requirements, and strategic planning, I help boards operate effectively and with confidence. I’m skilled in managing meetings, preparing documentation, and supporting leadership transitions, ensuring that governance structures are robust, accountable, and fit for purpose.
Outside of work, I have a keen interest in the arts, keeping fit, and gardening. I’m also a huge football fan and love attending live games with my sons.
